I painted this from a photo I took at the Paular Monastery near the village of Rascafria, in the mountains near Madrid Spain. The butterfly was in a patch of lavender.  Apparently, this species is on the decline in Britain but is common elsewhere in Europe. There are 14 different species of fritillaries including some in North America and a Spanish version called the “Queen of Spain Fritillary”.
