My mind races back to West Virginia whenever I hear John Denver’s “Take Me Home Country Roads”. Our family roots in the town of Frenchton go back five generations. So, it was only natural that two of my sisters and I each chose to live there briefly, building happy memories of my grandmother’s company while we decided what to do with our lives. Walking down the town’s main street one day, I asked Andy if I could take his picture in front of the store. Decades later, as I painted the scene trying to record as many details as possible, it called up unexpected memories; like the sound of the screen door every time a customer came in, the comforting smell of a country store and above all, the voices of the friendly people who lived in that special place.
